It was a matrimony between an American biochemist and the founder of Margaret River Devils Lair, that set the scene for one of the nation's most illustrious estates. A member of the Top 1OO Wineries of World, Giant Steps were established 1997, with a view to assembling an elite range of limited release Yarra Valley vintages. Crafted from the fruit of superior sites, some yielding just a few hundred cases each year, these are exclusive editions from bespoke parcels of elite terroir, bearing the curiously cryptic monikers of precious blocks of vine, Gruyere Farm, Applejack and Wombat Creek. Fashioned for aficianados of the euro style, defined by their winsome fruit and graceful tannins, the Giant Steps single vineyard range are all distinct for their expression of place, each articulate of a unique soil and influence of clime... Somewhere near the Seaview end of McLaren Vale's Chapel Hill Road, a perfunctory passerine perched her pincers astride a pair of power poles and saw herself alit. Down she went amongst the dry grown branches of an old Grenache vineyard, setting the valuable veterans ablaze. The scorched site eventually came to the attention of a winemaking trio, the Messrs Leske, Tynan & Cooke, Masters of Wine and a venerable vintner, all driven by a consuming passion to make greater Grenache. Thistledown vintage very small amounts of the most extraordinary Grenache. Beautifully detailed and conspicuously elegant, their floral bouquets and graceful finish emulate the aromatic lift and peacock's tail of a prettily perfumed Pinot Noir. Magnificent to savour as a captivating aperitif, a bliss alongside fine cuisine, the Grenache of Thistledown represent an exquisite new direction in the evolving Aussie Grenache style... Not much has changed at the Glenfiddich Distillery since the first spirit ran from the stills on Christmas Day 1887. It is still independently owned and run by the fifth generation of the same family. Glenfiddich's modern day Malt masters maintain the refinement of this superior brand through a single-minded dedication to craftsmanship and quality throughout every stage of production. The Glenfiddich craftsmen have created a complex, mellow Single Malt Scotch whisky from years of patient maturation in casks which have previously held Sherry and Bourbon. It is secreted away in the distillery's traditional warehouse, where the cool, thick stone walls and low ceilings mature the whisky to perfection.
From the source of the Robbie Dhu springs, the water is piped directly to the distillery and not even cattle or sheep are allowed in the vicinity. Glenfiddich Ancient Reserve 18 Year Old shows an elegant nose, faintly sweet, with scents of apple and wood. It is robust and full-bodied, but remarkably mellow. A slightly sweet palate, perfectly balanced by subtle oak and a delicate maltiness leads to a soft whisky finish, calm and long lasting.
