Constructed during early settlement by a supervisor of colonial convicts, at the very epicentre of the market gardens which serviced Hobart, Clarence House is a heritage listed manor which remains largely unaltered since the 1830s. It passed through several hands before being acquired by the Kilpatricks in 1993, who answered the call of Bacchus and established the grounds to vine. There are now sixteen hectares of viticulture, several significant Burgundy clones of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with smaller plantings of Sauvignon and Pinot Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet and Tempranillo. What's most unique about the Clarence House vineyards are the soils and topography, a number of northeast slopes which catch the early sun yet shade the vines from afternoon heat. Halls Gap Vineyard was planted 1969, along the steep eastern slopes and parched rocky crags of Grampians Ranges, at the very beginning of a renaissance in Victorian viticulture. Since early establishment in the 1860s by the noble Houses of Seppelt and Bests, the region had earned the most elite peerage, a provenance of extraordinary red wines, bursting with bramble opulence and lined with limousin tannins. The Halls Gap property had long been respected as a venerable supplier to the nation's most illustrious brands. Seppelt and Penfolds called on harvests from Halls Gap for their finest vintages. Somewhere near the Seaview end of McLaren Vale's Chapel Hill Road, a perfunctory passerine perched her pincers astride a pair of power poles and saw herself alit. Down she went amongst the dry grown branches of an old Grenache vineyard, setting the valuable veterans ablaze. There's very little that comes out of Central Otago which isn't thoroughly spectacular. Super Nanny represents the best of the very best, a very limited release edition, vinified from a parcel or two, hand picked and scrupulously sorted off the most splendid rows on Nanny Goat Vineyard. Whole bunches and cold soaks, hand plunges and a gentle press, a luxuriously high proportion of new oak for malolactic and age. A seductively dark brooding bouquet, savouryness and meat, dutch chocolate underbelly, rhubarb and plum, a taut mineral line over toothsome, gummy tannins.

At latitude 45 degrees south, New Zealand’s Central Otago is the southern most wine region in the world

Alpine mountains to the west, rocky ranges to the south and dry tussock covered hills to the east dominate the landscape, and all assist in the topographical elements of this most exceptional of terroirs. This is a region of climatic extremes, with typically very hot summers, short autumns and bitterly cold days in winter. The soils are rocky with poor fertility. All of these conditions are perfect for producing world-class Pinot Noir. The unique terroir of Central Otago produces wines with incredible intensity and distinction. Nanny Goat Vineyard focuses solely on Pinot Noir.
