It was a matrimony between an American biochemist and the founder of Margaret River Devils Lair, that set the scene for one of the nation's most illustrious estates. Amphora As You Like It»
There are four tiny patches of vine at Scotchman's Hill, which have been mollycoddled by Robin Brockett, since the start of his tenure as chief winemaker in the 1980s. Excruciatingly limited after a strict pruning and rigorous sorting of fruit, they each yield a mere hundred cases of wine. Brockett has set aside the precious harvests of these superior blocks for his own label, a personal project to hand craft the finest of vintage, an exclusive range of the Bellarine's most elite single vineyard efforts. Pinot Gris is sourced from Ants Nest Vineyard, high up on a ridge overlooking Marlborough's Waihopai Valley, where Catalina Sounds have taken a very hands on role to husbanding vines. The team are devoted to fashioning highly expressive wines that stand the test of being fully approachable when young, whilst carrying the palate weight and quality of fruit to mate with fine faire and develop in the short term. Catalina Sounds exudes bright varietal characters of peaches and nut with the distinctive luscious lychee expression of Marlborough.

At Catalina Sounds, the fruit is the focus, sourcing the best possible from good growers is fundamental. Winemaking tis non interventional, the fruit must be allowed to express itself. The wines are meant to be food friendly and unpretentious. Pinot Gris vines are grown to clay soils rooted on the ridge line, they impart minerality, fruit density and finesse to the structure. Grapes are predominantly hand harvested and whole bunch pressed. A variety of fermentation techniques were employed, some parcels are quickly vinified at warm temperatures in oak puncheons in order to build a savoury profile. Others are held in chilled fermenters to preserve aromatics while building richness.
Goldish lemon hue. Lifted honey and pear, apricot and orange blossom aromas. Rich, full and luscious palate with honey, lemon and poached pear syrup characters that coat the mouth. The tang of citrus sorbet accompanies the fruit, it's a wonderfully complex wine, yet easy to appreciate. The palate is rich yet supple, combining tastes of pear and apricot with a clean and dry finish.

At Catalina Sounds, the fruit is the focus - sourcing the best possible from passionate growers in Marlborough is fundamental for all the varietals. The winemaking techniques are very non-interventionalist, the fruit must be allowed to express itself. The wines are meant to be food-friendly, and not over-the-top. Subtle, elegant wines are what Catalina Sounds strive to produce.

Catalina Sounds

Nina Stocker was born in Basel, Switzerland close to the famous Alsace wine region of France. Her father was very interested in viticulture and became involved in a tiny vineyard near the village. Family weekends and holidays were often spent in picturesque wine regions of France and Northern Italy. Following their return to Australia in 1987, the Stockers planted Cabernet Shiraz and Merlot on the rolling ironstone hillside near Tallarook in Central Victoria.

During Nina's Science /Arts degree at Monash University where she majored in microbiology, immunology, and history, she was fortunate to have an opportunity to do some work experience as a cellar hand for Don Lewis at Mitchelton, followed by a vintage at Wirra Wirra. Nina decided she wanted to further her studies in Oenology at Adelaide University.

She gained further experience through vintages in Barolo in Northern Italy, Bordeaux, the Northern Rhone and in Portugal. Nina worked as an assistant winemaker at Giant Steps in the Yarra Valley with Steve Flamsteed and Team for three years, fuelling her passion for cool climate wines, especially Pinot Noir.

Catalina Sounds

Marlborough has interested Nina since the days of working in a bar while at university. She was always being asked by customers for a Marlborough savvy. She developed a fascination for this popular style of wine, and discovered that a diversity of wine styles and varieties were also grown there. The unique cool climate, abundant sunshine and plethora of sub-regions in spectacular surroundings all conspired to convince Nina that this was where she wanted to live and make wine.
