Grown to the frigid climes of Central Otago, the vines at Prophet's Rock were established 1999 to the most auspicious sites in the nether regions around the ancient goldfields of Bendigo Creek. Challenging aspects with breathtaking views of Cromwell Basin and Pisa Ranges, these are places defined by their fortuitous soils and favourable climes, tiny parcels of vine capable of just a few hundred cases each vintage, picked for their confluence of growing conditions and husbanded by a devout cadre. The winemaking is decidedly French, small vessels and wild yeasts, followed by an extended term on sedimentary lees for opulence. Invigorated by the warmth of alluvial pebbles and infused by the minerality of quartz schists, the opportune vines yield a small range of wines, made by environmental purists in the old fashioned way,.. Coonawarra graziers have access to the finest soils for viticulture. Doug Balnaves was born in the very heart of Coonawarra, quite near the sacred cricket pitch at Penola. An accomplished herdsman and shearer, Balnaves took up the challenge of planting vineyards in 1971. Working under the tutelage of legendary Coonawarra winemaker Bill Redman, Balnaves immersed himself in the culture of the vine, ultimately establishing a grande marque of Coonawarra and securing the inaugural presidency of the Coonawarra Vignerons Association. He remains a lifelong member of the Penola Pipe Band. For those who like their wines structured yet satin, powerful yet prettily perfumed, in the mouthfillingly muscular Coonawarra way, the Balnaves brand endures in the tradition of world class vintages grown to Terra Rosa soils, enriched by.. Crozes Hermitage is the largest of the northern Rhône appellations. Syrah is the main varietal grown, followed by smaller plantings of Marsanne and Roussanne. Fruit for Domaine des Grands Chemins is all hand picked, plot by plot, as grapes achieve optimal levels of ripeness. Batches are cold soaked and vinified in traditional open concrete fermenters. Daily cap punching and pumpovers are employed for maximum extractions over a period of ten to twelve days maceration. Upon completion, the wine is treated to fourteen months maturation in a combination of tank and small Burgundian prior use oak barrels. A regimen of regular rackings introduces the essential aeration to round out the tannins.
Deep coloured, garnet hue deepened by purple tinges. The nose shows seductive whiffs of crushed black fruit, dark cherries, blackberry and currants that evolve in the glass to reveal coffee, delicate oak and smoky notes. Peppercorns and spice add lift and harmony to the richly aromatic palate. The wine is fresh and lively in the mouth, with persistant flavours and good length, true to its origins, solidly built around a structure of solid tannins.
