Three British Army officers, in their capacity as agents of the East India Company, established one of Western Australia's first agricultural enterprises in 1836. Named after Captain Richmond Houghton, it was not until Thomas Yule's stewardship that vines were planted and the first vintage of Houghton wine flowed in 1859. Thomas Yule now sources fruit from the eminent Justin Vineyard in Frankland River, a dark ruby Shiraz of lifted liquorice and intense brambleberry, seasoned by piquant pepper notes and supported by showroom tannins. It passed through several hands before being acquired by the Kilpatricks in 1993, who answered the call of Bacchus and established the grounds to vine. There are now sixteen hectares of viticulture, several significant Burgundy clones of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with smaller plantings of Sauvignon and Pinot Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet and Tempranillo. Argiano established their Montalcino vineyards with a priority to determine the most favourable aspects and climes. Harvest normally begins around the end of September as the earlier ripening Syrah and Merlot are brought to the Argiano wineworks, followed in October by the later cropping Cabernet and Sangiovese. Each of four different varieties are separately vinified to preserve their individual characteristics. Upon completion of ferments, the wines are put to second use French oak barriques and traditional large Slovenian casks for several months maturation, softening the tannins and integrating the fruit, before the final assemblage of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and equal parts Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah.
Deep scarlet colour. Aromas of currant and spice, black fruits, chocolate and plum. The palate exhibits exciting power, generous fruit flavours with the inherent sweetness of Merlot acting as a bridge between the firm earthiness of Sangiovese, spicy blackcurrant of Cabernet and warm red fruit of Syrah. Full bodied with soft tannins and long lasting finish.
