Chardonnay Semillon Clare South Australia
Selected for Government House and Swiss Embassy Canberra. Prolific winemaker and wine show judge Stephen John honed his skills for many years at Seppelts, before joining Wolf Blass as Chief White Winemaker, then General Manager of Operations at Quelltaler. A blend of Semillon and Chardonnay is the Blanc de Blanc from vineyards around Watervale, picked early in the season to capture the freshness and elegance. An aperitif style displaying elegant structure, balanced acid and lovely soft integrated flavours.
Winemaker Stephen John is a fifth-generation Barossan, and today holds the record of winning nine gold medals at a single event while winemaker at Wolf Blass. After leaving the Quelltaler Winery, Stephen established his own operations with a view to crafting small batch wines. The winery operation is centred around a renovated eighty year old stable/blacksmith shop which proudly overlooks the township of Watervale and surrounding vineyards, on seven hectares of dry grown vines. Stephen has judged on the national circuit since the early 1980s and is a long-time judge at the Adelaide and National Wine Shows.
Medium straw colour. Excellent mousse and fine bead, aromas of vanilla and chalk-lime, buttery nuances and milk bottle characters. Complex but contented bouquets that grip like a ying and yang, fresh creamy fruit, nuts and toastiness, citrus and confectionary, amazingly integrated with the freshest compliments of warm, yeasty, leesy characters. A slight twist towards the traditional as the palate tiptoes between the richness and orchardy fruit characters. An exceptional Clare sparkler with the inimitable grapey chalkiness of the locality, peachy and refreshingly minerally, clean with attractive acid a consistent creaminess throughout.
