The story of Tyrrell is inextricably linked to the story of wine in Australia. English immigrant Edward Tyrrell planted his first cuttings in 1858, establishing his pioneering company after receiving a grant for ostensibly poor pasture land in the lee of Hunter Valley's Brokenback range. Verdelho grapes are harvested from good estate vineyards in the Hunter Valley. Following the crush, free run juices are cool fermented to retain the fragrant qualities so expressive of Verdelho. A small amount of residual sugar remains in the wine post fermentation for added complexity and palate weight. Old Winery is fined, filtered and bottled promptly after vinification to retain all the crisp varietal fruit characters.
Pale straw yellow with a hint of lime green. Fresh bouquet with a tropical nose enhanced by lifted spice. Rich fruit and honey flavours fill the palate, complemented by a crisp lemony finish. Like all good Verdelho, will develop beautifully, but the fresh, lively characters make Old Winery is most enjoyable now, serve slightly chilled with seafood and spicy Asian dishes.
