Established just eleven years after the founding of South Australia, the ancient vines in the Hundred Of Moorooroo were planted circa 1836 by the Jacob brothers, after accompanying Colonel William Light on the Seven Special Surveys expedition to populate Adelaide's north. Moorooroo endures as the nation's cardinal parcel of vine, the mother rootstock for many of the Barossa's most distinguished sites. The Heathcote Wineworks were one of the first commercial wineries in central Victoria. Prominently placed along Heathcote's main boulevard, established by Thomas Craven in 1854 to cater for the huge influx of gold miners seeking their fortune. Thomas Craven was a purveyor of spirits and wine, he traded in gold, providing a lifeline to local prospectors. An entrepreneurial type, he also operated a coach service from stables behind the cellar door, despatching supplies and delivering mail around the central Victorian goldfields. Tscharke Stonewell Cabernet Sauvignon CONFIRM VINTAGE

The worthy vineyards along Stonewell Road at Marananga, have been source of the most memorable vintages in Barossa Cabernet. Tscharke established a smaller block of vine here in 2001, the quality of fruit however belies its teenage years. The auspicious plantings were sown east to west, aimed at protecting fruit from the parching late afternoon summer sun. The accumulated skills of six generations in Barossa viticulture, have sired a precious site which yields a multi dimensional Cabernet wine of amazing depth, structure and length.

The later ripening Stonewell Road vineyard is planted to deep red/brown clay soils with underlying calcareous chalks, well suited to realizing harvests of well balanced fruit which are unaffected by excessive exposure to summer heat. Grapes are all picked by hand and completely destemmed, crushed into an open top fermenter and inoculated for vinification at temperatures between 22ºC and 25ºC. The active ferments are punched down and plunged over by heading down boards for optimal extraction of flavour, colour and tannin. Following two months of skin contact, batches are gently pressed into a selection of seasoned and new French oak barrels for an extravagant nineteen months élevage. Alcohol 14.5%
Deeply coloured crimson red. Intensely fragrant nose of stunning varietal complexity, spearmint and cassis, brambleberries and lavender, roasted coffee bean. Luscious full bodied palate of juicy black licorice and cassis, blue berries and dark Barossa chocolateyness over the length of powerful yet disciplined, chalky tannins.
